St Aidan’s Swing Band has gained recognition at many national and regional festivals and competitions. It performs across the Yorkshire region on a regular basis and has played as far afield as Canada, Austria, Switzerland (Montreux) and Edinburgh. Vicki Elliott has directed and conducted the band for 23 years.
The band has been very successful at the National Festival of Music for Youth gaining various accolades over the years such as several ‘Outstanding Performance’ Awards, a ‘New Composition’ Award and were invited to play in the School’s Prom at The Royal Albert Hall.
The band have also won the School’s Section of the Great North Big Band Festival in Sunderland and from 2012 to 2022 have been the winners of several ‘Special Adjudicator Awards’ including Best Soloist and Best Section in 2022.
In 2016 the band performed at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and in the Summer of 2018 enjoyed a very successful tour to Switzerland and Lake Konstanz.
The Swing Band played The Music in the Park venue at the Montreux Jazz Festival back in 2013 but unfortunately their scheduled performance at the festival last year had to be cancelled. They hope to return to the festival in the very near future.
